Why Scented Products (Fakegrances) Are Not Safe

If all fake fragrances (I call them fakegrances) were banned tomorrow, the world would be a dramatically healthier place by the following day. That's not going to happen, but the more people who refuse to use them in any form, the faster they'll disperse (so to speak).

But watch out, those who manufacture products containing fakegrances are sneaky. The word "unscented" usually means that fragrances have been used to cover up fragrances. To actually avoid fragrances you have to look for the words "fragrance free" on the label. By fake fragrances I mean that they're not found in nature. Oh sure, they may smell like a rose, or mint, or apple, but what goes into creating that aroma has nothing to do with the flower or fruit.

Virtually all perfumes, scented laundry soaps and fabric softeners, so-called air fresheners (they should be called air poisoners) and many cleaning products are scented with fakegrances. Even dry cleaners are getting into the act, handing back clothes that are clean, pressed and exuding fragrance. Perfumes are All Fake Well, almost all. Unless they're pure essential oils, they're made from a nasty brew of dozens if not hundreds of chemicals which are, of course, a secret. For example, the benzene family of chemicals tends to have a sweetish aroma that is very popular among perfumers.

The benzenes are petroleum-based, so they're cheap, easy to come by, and, by the way, a known cause of leukemia. It was one thing when a woman spritzed some benzene on her wrist before a romantic evening, but it's quite another when it's everywhere from clothes to cars to the restroom in the dentist's office. Or how about those phthalates, plastics that can interfere with the normal sexual development of a fetus or infant. Phthalates have recently been banned from toys in California which is great, but how about clothes and bed sheets? Apparently phthalates make perfumes stick around longer so they're in just about everything scented. Asthmatics Should Look for Fakegrances as Causes I don't want to downplay those good old-fashioned allergens such as ragweed and cats, but according to the Environmental Working Group, "Fragrance formulas are considered to be among the top five known allergens and can trigger asthma attacks."

Are doctors giving this information to their asthmatic patients? Not very often. I'll bet you didn't know that many processed foods contain fakegrances. Take for example diacetyl, a chemical that gives microwave popcorn its buttery flavor and aroma, and also causes serious lung disease when heated and inhaled frequently. Diacetyl is being phased out of microwave popcorn, but not before many popcorn factory workers were permanently disabled by it. Now it might take a lot of microwave popcorn fumes to knock down an adult, but how about a child with asthma? For optimal health, it's important to avoid fakegrances, and it's also important to speak up if they're in a public area. You'll be amazed at how many other people will suddenly admit they hate fakegrances when you speak up.

If someone in your workplace is using heavy perfume, or there's a so-called air freshener in the restroom, do something about it. You have a right to breathe clean air. How about products that claim to be "natural scented"? Sorry about that, but "naturally scented" means absolutely nothing. It probably smells like something in nature such as apple or rose or jasmine, but it's likely made from the same old nasty chemical brew, complete with carcinogens, xenohormones and allergens. The only way to be sure that a scented product is for real is to read the label. If it says, "pure essential oils" or "lavender oil" for example, it's the genuine article.

LONDON - Chances are if you knew the amount of bacteria that lives on your cell phone due to the amount of texting, e-mailing and phoning you do, you’d be alarmed.

According to the UK Telegraph, millions of British cell phones have been found to exceed the recommended acceptable levels of bacteria.

A study by Which? Magazine, found that swabs and analysis detected harmful, elevated levels of bacteria that are a result of poor hygiene.

Many people have adopted the habit of using hand sanitizers on a regular basis, but they may not think to give their cell phone a wipe with the same substance using a tissue at the same time.

Even though the bacteria may not be an immediate risk, it can become a breeding ground for more serious germs.

Unaware that bacteria can linger on a phone’s surface, the bacteria can spread to others when they look at photos on a friend’s cell.

“The levels of potentially harmful bacteria… were off the scale,” said hygiene expert Jim Francis.

In fact, NDTV reports that cell phones have 18 times more bacteria that toilet handles.

"What this shows is how easy it is to come into contact with bacteria,” said Which? researcher, Ceri Stanaway. “People see toilet flushes as being something dirty to touch but they have less bacteria than phones.”

"People need to be mindful of that by observing good hygiene themselves and among others who they pass the phone to when looking at photos, for example."

The research group advises that cell phones should be cleansed regularly with alcohol wipes, or if you have a baby wipe handy that will do the trick as well. Compressed air is a good option to remove debris in the tiny crevices you can't reach with a wipe.

Clear a Clog
You can often unclog a sink with about four Alka Seltzer tablets and a cup of white vinegar. Just drop the tablets down the drain, follow with the vinegar and allow to stand for about ten minutes. Flush with a pot of boiling water.

Doing this on a regular basis can help keep that drain clear.

Clean a Toilet
Drop in two Alka Seltzer tablets to quickly clean your toilet bowl. Allow the water to stop fizzing and then brush with the toilet bowl brush. The inside should be clean, shiny, and deodorized.

Clean Your Glass Baking Dishes
I don't know about your but I love my glass bakeware. It can be hard to get clean when something gets burned on, however. In theory only, mind you...I would never burn anything, myself. If I ever did burn something on my glass bakeware I would use three Alka Seltzer tablets in hot water to clean it off so that it looked like new again.

Whiten and Brighten
Soak your white cotton items in a solution of a gallon of warm water and two Alka Seltzer tablets to brighten it. It will end up being white without any dingy yellow color. Hang in the sun to dry to get rid of any lingering stains.

Deodorize the Fridge
You can have the cleanest, freshest smelling refrigerator in town. Just drop a tablet of Alka Seltzer in a cup of water and let it bubble in the refrigerator for a half hour or so. If it still smells a little funny use another tablet in water to wash it down. No more slices of salmon flavored cream pie.

Extracted from the leaf, eucalyptus oil has powerful antiseptic, deodorizing, and antibacterial properties. It is especially effective in killing various strains of Staphylococcus bacteria. A mixture of 2% eucalyptus oil diffused into the air has been shown to destroy 70% of the Staphylococcus bacteria in the affected room.

In addition to these everyday applications, eucalyptus blends wonderfully with most other essential oils, especially lemon, sweet orange, peppermint and lavender.

Keep a bottle of eucalyptus in each bathroom and add 5 drops or so directly into the commode water to instantly freshen the area. The oil remains there until someone comes along and flushes it away. This is a fabulous way to freshen up your bathroom during the day or before company is to arrive.

Whenever shower drains, sink drains, and the garbage disposal begin to get stale, add a few drops to each and the odor immediately disappears. When rinsing out the garbage can, 5-6 drops are added to a few inches of hot, soapy water on the bottom. Swish it around and it instantly deodorizes the can. Once clean and dry put another 5 drops onto a napkin and toss it into the can prior to lining it. This simple act will keep your trash can fresh between bag changes.

Eucalyptus can kill dust mites so this is an especially useful application when changing linens. Mattresses and pillows are misted daily with a spray bottle of water and 30 -40 drops of eucalyptus. This really helps to keep bedding fresh between linen changes. Be sure not to mist silk bedding or any other fabrics that can water spot though.

Vaucuuming: Take 2 cotton balls and add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the cotton balls and drop them in your vacuum bag to fill your home with your favorite aromatherapy scents while vacuuming.

Room Scent: Put a couple of drops of essential oil on your light bulbs in your lamps when not in use. When you turn on your light again the heat from the bulb will warm the oil and add a nice fragrance to your room. Make sure the light bulb is off and cold before adding the oil.

Mice: It is said that mice do not like Peppermint. Put some Peppermint oil in a spray bottle and add a little water. Spray where you think mice may be in your home.

Dust happens. It’s a universal truth that as soon as you dust your furniture, more dust will collect. But, that doesn’t mean that the battle has to end there. Dust can be – and should be – fought. Why? Dust creates lots of problems, from eye irritation to lingering colds and allergies to that annoying itchy or runny nose. More importantly, it makes a house dirty and that attracts more dust. Not only that, but as our homes become tighter – and more heavily electronic – the dust problem is an increasing one.

Electronics, like those mammoth TV’s, cable boxes, and players, not to mention, attract and trap dust. Then, once it’s attracted, all that great insulation and tight-fitting windows keeps it trapped in the house until you get rid of it. And even if you are the most meticulous house keeper, dust will always come back to bother you.

Some rooms have more dust than others too. The bedroom, with all its fabric in the mattress, pillows, bedding, curtains, blinds, and carpeting is one giant dust magnet, making dusting in the bedroom especially important. Have you ever noticed that when you go to bed, your nose suddenly gets stuffy and you reach for the breathing strips, antihistamine, or chest rub? A lot of people have this same “problem.” But the problem probably isn’t your sinuses, it’s dust.

The living room is also another dust magnifier with all the dust-magnet electronics and upholstered furniture. Lastly on the dust attraction list are the kitchen (top of the fridge scare you?) and the laundry room (just look behind that dryer), making these two more spots that need more frequent dusting. Fortunately, you can arm yourself with some dust-fighting tools and information.

What is dust made up of?
Dust is made up of a variety of things from blowing dirt, bacteria, pollen, pollutants, molds, animal dander, hair, decomposing insects, fibers, dryer lint, insulation, dust mites and their excrement, and mostly, skin flakes that humans shed.

Where does dust come from?
It comes from a variety of sources including plants, roads, wind, clothes dryers, electronics, attics, basements, air conditioning and heating ducts and vents, pets, pollen, insects, carpeting, knick knacks. If you live in the south, coastal states, desert, or Southwest, you have more than your fair share of dust due to excess pollen, windy, and dry conditions.
